Underworld Albums
Collection 1988-2012

Underworld is een Britse band die zich bezighoudt met 
het produceren van technomuziek. De band bestaat uit
Karl Hyde en Rick Smith. Voor 2000 maakte Darren 
Emerson ook deel uit van Underworld. Darren Emerson 
was betrokken bij het mixwerk. Rick Smith is de muzikale 
motor die tegenwoordig de muziek schrijft en produceert. 
Karl Hyde is verantwoordelijk voor de zang en de creatieve 
output van de band. In het begin van de jaren '80 waren 
Hyde en Smith ook verantwoordelijk voor het project 
"Freur", een synthpopband die voortkwam uit de new 
wavescene. Freur maakte al jaren voordat Prince dat 
deed gebruik van een symbool als naam. Het symbool is 
een kringelend lijntje dat nog het meest lijkt op een hiëro-
glief uit de Mayatijd. Om zakelijke redenen hebben zij na-
derhand besloten om aan dit symbool de klank "Freur" toe 
te voegen. Freur heeft een kleine hit gehad met de single 
"Doot Doot" die uitkwam in 1983. In 1986 is het project 
gestopt, waarna Hyde en Smith in 1987 Underworld op-
richtten. De track "Doot Doot" is nog verschenen op de 
soundtrack van de film "Vanilla Sky". Het was ook Hyde die 
in 1996 het idee opperde om een commercieel artworkbu-
reau op te richten. Dit resulteerde in juni 1997 in de oprich-
ting van Tomato, dat heeft samengewerkt met o.a. Levi's en 
Pepsi. Hyde en Smith zijn tegenwoordig gezamenlijk direc-
