On 6 June 1971, Hughes Airwest Flight 706 collided with a U.S. Marine Corps F-4B Phantom II 15,000 feet over the San Gabriel Mountains. A total of 50 people from both planes were killed. The sole survivor of the collision was the Radar Intercept Officer from the Phantom. He ejected in time, while the pilot failed to do so.
