Post Description
This diverse programme of works by Frederick Ashton, the founder choreographer of the Royal Ballet, marks the 25th anniversary since his death. The centrepiece is Ashton's atmospheric ballet La Valse, which sees the Royal Opera House stage swelled by swirling dancers in tailcoats and ball gowns beneath golden chandeliers and elegant drapes. Set to Ravel's haunting score, La Valse depicts the distant world of nineteenth-century Imperial Vienna - and with its visceral rhythm which grows in intensity before ultimately overwhelming the music, the nostalgic work is said to represent the destruction wrought by World War I. Also included in a rich mixed programme is the passionate one-act ballet Marguerite and Armand, which sees Tamara Rojo partnered by guest artist Sergei Polunin. Sandwiched between these two works are Meditation from Thais, Voices of Spring and Monotones I and II.
