Op de laatste dag van de eerste bemande missie naar Mars, denkt een crewlid van Tantalus Base dat hij iets bijzonders heeft ontdekt, namelijk gefossiliseerd bewijs voor bacterieel leven. Hij is echter niet van plan de ontdekking met de rest te delen en besluit op eigen houtje achter nog meer bewijs aan. Maar dan stort de grond onder zijn voeten in en valt hij in een diepe spleet. De rest van de groep is hier kapot van en gaat naarstig naar hem op zoek, maar dan verdwijnen er ineens nog meer mensen. Langzaam komt het besef dat de ontdekte levensvorm nog volop in leven is en daarnaast ook nog eens gevaarlijk is.
