The TV movie is based on the true story of Lizzie Borden, a Sunday School teacher who lived with her father Andrew Borden, her stepmother Abby and her older sister Emma in a small house in Fall River, Massachusetts. 

On a hot summer day in August 1892, Lizzie witnesses a grisly murder scene of her father and stepmother who were brutally killed with a hatchet. When the authorities get involved, their evidence quickly points to young Lizzie as their prime suspect in the case. 

Lizzie,s lawyer Andrew Jennings however, argues that a woman could not commit such a cruel act being that it is way too gruesome a crime for any woman to commit at the time. Either way, 

Lizzie is put on trial for the murders of her parents and the courtroom case makes headlines in all the national newspapers throughout the country, saying this is the most infamous crime of the century.
