³º Polish guitarist Boguslaw Balcerak started this º ³
³º Power Metal outfit BOGUSLAW BALCERAK’S CRYLORD 5 º ³
³º years ago in 2009, releasing the first album º ³
³º “Blood of the Prophets” in 2011 to a decent º ³
³º response in terms of written reviews. The follow º ³
³º up “Gates of Valhalla” contains many of the same º ³
³º guest vocals that appeared on the previous º ³
³º effort, along with MASTERPLAN/ AT VANCE vocalist º ³
³º Rick Altzi and TEMPLE OF SIN singer Ricky º ³
³º Wychowaniec offering two more melodic º ³
³º perspectives. º ³
³º º ³
³º Ultimately the material is in the neo-classical º ³
³º power metal mold, certainly favoring those who º ³
³º love SYMPHONY X and especially anything related º ³
³º to YNGWIE MALMSTEEN. This means high octane º ³
³º screams, thunderous chops, and of course º ³
³º shredding that can transpose the best of Bach, º ³
³º Beethoven, and Paganini in one. Göran handles º ³
³º the vocals through charm and grace on the ballad º ³
³º “Lost Again” – a 7:35 epic that should have many º ³
³º hearts racing as Fererico and Boguslaw trade off º ³
³º beautiful, emotional-oriented keyboard/ guitar º ³
³º breaks. º ³
³º º ³
³º Carsten handles a lot of the mid-tempo to º ³
³º slightly faster arrangements, coming out the º ³
³º gate swinging on the cruising opener “Passage to º ³
³º the Other Side” and reaching killer high º ³
³º sustaining notes for that chorus, while also º ³
³º captivating in that darker, mystical mode for º ³
³º another favorite “Deadnight Serenade”. For a º ³
³º change of pace it is refreshing to hear former º ³
³º YNGWIE singer Marc Boals handle a more º ³
³º straightforward, melodic metal piece like “We º ³
³º Came to Rock” – as I think this song is just º ³
³º addictive in a good time way, the riff and º ³
³º groove melding as one in that late 80’s / early º ³
³º 90’s manner while Boguslaw again delivers º ³
³º through smoldering finger tricks and licks the º ³
³º passion and fury of this style. º ³
³º º ³
³º These 10 songs are not mere exercises in show- º ³
³º off Power Metal – Boguslaw and his compatriots º ³
³º perform in a solid songwriting format where º ³
³º harmonies, melodies, hooks, and a slight º ³
³º ‘groove/tempo’ factor matter – but you will get º ³
³º the chance to hear fantastic drumming, bass º ³
³º work, and keyboard displays. The Rick Altzi sung º ³
³º “Judgment Day” and “Pompeii” are two numbers to º ³
³º really key on musically, both impressive in º ³
³º terms of pacing, technique, and comfortable º ³
³º transitions and instrumental expertise that show º ³
³º these players know their neo-classical power º ³
³º metal through and through. º ³

³º A dramatic improvement to my ears, “Gates of º ³
³º Valhalla” should ensure neo-classical oriented º ³
³º Power Metal mavens another record to champion in º ³
