³º What we have here is the first album from Ann º ³
³º Boleyn and Hellion in over a decade. It has been º ³
³º so long, as a matter of fact, that upon hearing º ³
³º Will Not Go Quietly for the first time, one º ³
³º might think that this was a completely new band º ³
³º given that the music is so far removed from the º ³
³º work that Hellion did in the 80’s and early º ³
³º 90’s. Hellion’s music back then was a hybrid of º ³
³º British and Euro metal, a mixture of Rainbow, º ³
³º Deep Purple, and the Scorpions. On Will Not Go º ³
³º Quietly, we get what sounds like a cross between º ³
³º Nightwish and Strange Highways/Angry Machines- º ³
³º era Dio, with a singer that at times sounds like º ³
³º Grace Slick with schizophrenia. It sounds like a º ³
³º surefire winner, doesn’t it? º ³
³º º ³
³º Well, not exactly. Over the past year, I have º ³
³º discovered Hellion’s music and have become º ³
³º fascinated with the life of the person whom the º ³
³º band is centered around, Ann Boleyn. The fact º ³
³º that she had been out of the scene for so long º ³
³º really had me rooting for her and longing for a º ³
³º record that I wouldn’t have to struggle to º ³
³º enjoy. I instead was left feeling let down since º ³
³º I had spent the night in what is a haunted º ³
³º mansion of an album and didn’t see anything º ³
³º scary come daybreak. º ³
³º º ³
³º There are strong points to be found on Will Not º ³
³º Go Quietly. Mikey Davis’ modern production º ³
³º really clears the cobwebs and makes the record º ³
³º sound modern. The playing is competent, and the º ³
³º lyrics while often choppy, clumsy, and filled º ³
³º with too many cliches, address such timely º ³
³º issues as the indifference to violence, º ³
³º censorship, and even anti-semitism. Another º ³
³º thing that comes to the fore is Ann Boleyn’s º ³
³º anger, which boils over on my favorite track, º ³
³º "Dead And Gone" where she burns with the º ³
³º righteous rage of a mother lion. I also enjoyed º ³
³ºthe experimentation of "User 7" on which Boleyn º ³
³º delivers a breathless vocal over top a bluesy, º ³
³º jazzy shuffle that marks the band’s biggest º ³
³º departure. º ³
³º º ³
³º However, the one thing that really deflates the º ³
³º record as a whole is the inconsistent º ³
³º songwriting. All of the tracks, even "Dead and º ³
³º Gone" to an extent, didn’t seem to be fully º ³
³º realized. For the most part, I found myself º ³
³º liking only parts of songs. For example the º ³
³º thrilling first 30 seconds of "Welcome(To My º ³
³º Humble Home)", the choruses of "The Last Straw", º ³
³º "Dream Deceiver", and "See You In Hell", and the º ³
³º driving riffery that signals the end of "Duchess º ³
³º Of Debauchery" point out that there was a º ³
³º classic comeback somewhere in here that was º ³
³º buried under uninspired riffs and keyboard º ³
³º trickery. There were times when I found myself º ³
³º rewriting the songs in my head and becoming º ³
³º frustrated that the songs weren’t as strong as º ³
³º they could have been. º ³
³º º ³
³º Another thing that I dislike about Will Not º ³
³º Quietly is that its darkness, menace, and º ³
³º gravity often sound forced, as if its creators º ³
³º were trying too hard to gain respect in and fit º ³
³º into a more violent and hostile metallic world º ³
³º after a long absence.º ³
³º º ³
³º Will Not Go Quietly was intended to be a solo º ³
³º album originally, a fact that becomes evident º ³
³º upon hearing the personal lyrics which in º ³
³º addition to being relevant, also deal with º ³
³º subjects such as lonliness and betrayal, making º ³
³º this listen akin to reading someone’s diary º ³
³º without their knowledge or consent. º ³
³º º ³
³º In closing I am pulled towards this disc due to º ³
³º its bravery and bite yet at the same time pushed º ³
³º away by its lack of connectivity and its º ³
³º unfulfilled potential. º ³
