The Band was een Canadees-Amerikaanse rockband, die onder die naam bestond van 1968 tot 1976 en daarna in gewijzigde samenstelling van 1983 tot 1999.

Ze maakten voor het eerst naam in de tweede helft van de jaren zestig als begeleidingsgroep van Bob Dylan. Ze werden later op eigen kracht zeer invloedrijk als vertolkers van Americana en zorgden mede voor het opnieuw populair worden van diverse vormen van Amerikaanse traditionele muziek. In hun muziek versmolt country met folk, blues en rock 'n roll.

In 1976 namen de bandleden afscheid in Winterland in San Francisco met een groots concert "The Last Waltz" op 24 november, de Amerikaanse nationale feestdag Thanksgiving. Hierbij werd The Band geholpen door een compleet orkest en een lange lijst van gasten onder wie Ronnie Hawkins, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Dr. John (Mac Rebennack), Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Paul Butterfield, Neil Diamond, Ronnie Wood, Ringo Starr en de dichter Lawrence Ferlinghetti, die het gedicht Loud Prayer voordroeg.
