Prince Rogers Nelson, beter bekend onder zijn artiestennaam 
Prince (Minneapolis, Minnesota, 7 juni 1958), is een Amerikaans 
popartiest en muzikant. Prince is een artiest in de funktraditie 
en gitarist in de rocktraditie, een componist, pianist, toetsenist, 
bassist en danser. Daarnaast ook platenproducer, en tijdelijk 
ook filmregisseur en acteur. Zijn muziek is een mengeling van 
blanke en zwarte muzikale invloeden, zoals Sly & the Family 
Stone, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Carlos Santana, 
Curtis Mayfield en Joni Mitchell. Toch heeft zijn muziek, ondanks 
de grote verscheidenheid, een duidelijk eigen geluid. Ook zijn 
zangstijl valt op: Prince maakt vaak gebruik van zijn kopstem, 
en deed dat vooral de eerste jaren van zijn carrière, maar ook 
zijn "normale" stem heeft een groot bereik. Prince staat bekend 
als een ambitieuze en getalenteerde workaholic, was een 
belangrijke vernieuwer in de popmuziek en bracht daarnaast 
eveneens vernieuwende en opzienbarende liveshows. Prince 
heeft een omvangrijk oeuvre. Tot en met 2010 zijn er onder 
zijn eigen naam in totaal 41 tot 44 albums uitgebracht. 30 of 
31 standaardalbums, twee livealbums, vier tot zes compilatie-
albums en zes remix- en niet in de winkel te verkrijgen albums. 
Daarnaast is Prince een van de meest gebootlegde artiesten.
