‘I’ll wait, I’ll wait for you.’ This apt lyric from album standout ‘Wrapped In Rainbows’ coincidentally reflects what everyone has been doing for the long awaited 2nd full length release from Farnham based band, Canterbury. Three years since debut album Thank You, Heavy In The Day’s July 9th release date will mark a huge new chapter in the bands career, and hopefully send them flying into the public.
The midpoint of the record,‘ Wrapped In Rainbows’ huge crashy chorus really hits home, the moment where you realise how nicely Canterbury have matured. A key change towards the end of the track defines it’s perfect single potential. In honesty, I’d be disappointed if it wasn’t released.
Nonetheless, Canterbury have really gone all out. ‘Heavy In The Day’ is definitely the ballad of the album. The shuffle drums keep a beautiful tempo to the song, and it instantly builds into an anthem, something to be enjoyed in a stadium. However cliché that sounds, it isn’t an insult. Canterbury deserve to go to bigger and better places. As always, Canterbury are the Kings of harmonies, and this record produced by Pete Miles hasn’t failed to excite me!
Previously released Singles, ‘Ready Yet’ and ‘More Than Know’ restore some chaos and passion back into the record. The two previously released singles from Canterbury have received airplay from Kerrang TV and even on Fearne Cotton’s Radio One show. The raw edge of the riff in ‘Ready Yet’ is punchy, aggressive and strikes the listener smack in the face making a bold statement. A perfect balance is struck with ‘Calm Down’ and ‘She’s A Flame’. This track shows that Canterbury have continued the theme of creating an album, which really does vary in style. ‘Whatever your music taste somebody would like at least 20 seconds of the record, Luke Prebble’ taken from an interview with the band in February. Mike Sparks added ‘It’s definitely varied like the last one. We almost challenge ourselves to write the most different sounding Canterbury song’. ‘She’s A Flame’ comes across as an elegant sounding song. It has an uplifting, and somewhat inspirational sound, which makes the record feel more intimate and personal than ‘Thank You’ the band’s first release.
Then from this the tempo increases to recently released single ‘Saviour’. It has to be the catchiest melody of the whole record. The chorus is one that sits at the back of the mind, ‘Are we just wasting away?, Are we just wasting the day?’ Then with an absolute pearler of a middle eight ‘Now put your hands up in the air for your saviour’, the lyrics of this album are just so much more relevant to the state of todays music. Could Canterbury be the saviour of Rock Music?
The album then has an injection of pace. Track, ‘Drive Ride Drive’ is the most energetic song of the album, with some My Chemical Romance style ‘lalalala’ but much better, and English. The frantic riff at the beginning of the song is bound to have the crowds going wild, and Canterbury are very much a fan orientated band.
‘Seen It All’ the final song of the record, showcases a completely different side to the lads. Incredibly produced and fantastically placed strings. Pre chorus that oozes excitement then a face melting guitar solo from James Pipe, and shows the stunning vocal range from Sparks.
To me, Canterbury are one of the most accessible bands in the UK right now. The varied styles in this album make it hard to find a track which one person wouldn’t like. After waiting such a long time, I feel I appreciate the time and effort they’ve put into this record. Recovering from losing a member, this record does reignite the passion and motivation to succeed, in this unfair music industry. Highlighting the importance of bands like Canterbury who need much more publicity! I can only say that this album will get listened to heavily. Perfect.
