Chicago is een Amerikaanse band uit Chicago. De band is vooral populair in Amerika en Japan en heeft wereldwijd meer dan 100 miljoen platen verkocht.

1967-1975:

De band werd in 1967 opgericht als The Chicago Transit Authority, maar op last van de echte CTA moest dat al na de eerste dubbelelpee worden verkort tot Chicago. Op dat eerste album staan vier opvallende composities: "I'm a man" (cover van de Spencer Davis Group) en "Liberation" (opgenomen tijdens een demonstratie) en "Free form guitar" (een eerste versie van een distortiongitaarsolo van Terry Kath). Andere nummers zijn "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" (pas in 1971 op single uitgebracht), "Beginnings" en "Questions 67 & 68".

De band maakte in eerste instantie stevige rockmuziek waarin jazzinvloeden een hoofdrol spelen. De nummers werden gezongen door Terry Kath, pianist Robert Lamm en bassist Peter Cetera. Qua populariteit had Chicago in de begintijd stevige concurrentie van het gelijkgestemde Blood, Sweat and Tears.

In 1972 verscheen Chicago V waarvan Saturday in the park (4th of July) in de Verenigde Staten een nummer 3-hit wordt; het succes was dusdanig dat er bijna twintig jaar later een festival naar werd vernoemd.

In 1974 werd de band uitgebreid met de Braziliaanse percussionist Laudir de Oliveira (ex-Sergio Mendes Brazil 66). Robert Lamm nam een soloplaat op waaraan Peter Cetera en de Pointer Sisters hun medewerking verleenden; het titelnummer Skinny Boy stond ook op het tegelijkertijd uitgebrachte Chicago VII maar dan met blazers. De Beach Boys zijn te horen in het nummer Wishing You Were Here. Dit beviel zo goed dat beide bands erop uit trokken voor een dubbeltournee; geheel volgens dit concept traden ze eerst apart op en daarna samen.

Chicago IX: Chicago's Greatest Hits is the first greatest hits album, and ninth album overall, by the American band Chicago and was released in 1975 by Columbia Records in both stereo (PC 33900) and SQ quadraphonic (PCQ 33900) versions.

Including all of Chicago's biggest hits thus far, this set stretches from their 1969 debut, The Chicago Transit Authority, to 1974's Chicago VII. Chicago VIII and its hits, having only come out just months earlier, were considered too recent to anthologize, while Chicago III's material was overlooked for inclusion because of its lack of truly big hit singles.

Chicago IX proved to be an enormous seller. It reached #1 in the US during a chart stay of 72 weeks. Even though 2002's The Very Best of: Only the Beginning superseded it, Chicago IX was also reissued by Rhino Records, Chicago's current distributor. The album did not chart in the UK.
