³º Sweden's Crystal Eyes is not a name one usually º ³
³º hears during a discussion about power metal º ³
³º which is a shame since they are quite the º ³
³º diamond on the rough. Forming in 1992 and º ³
³º releasing several demos and a compilation, they º ³
³º released their debut full length in 1999. I have º ³
³º to admit that my knowledge of them is rather º ³
³º limited since I only have ever owned their 2005 º ³
³º release, Confessions of the Maker, which º ³
³º featured none other than the incredible Daniel º ³
³º Heiman of Lost Horizon fame as session vocalist. º ³
³º That album was really good despite the º ³
³º surprisingly uninspired vocal effort by Mr º ³
³º Heiman. º ³
³º º ³
³º So now we are in 2014 and Crystal Eyes have º ³
³º released their seventh full length, Killer. Back º ³
³º on the vocals is their original vocalist as well º ³
³º as guitarist, Mikael Dahl. I actually like this º ³
³º guy's vocals. He is all over the place sounding º ³
³º like everyone from Atilla Dorn in places to Kai º ³
³º Hansen others to screams that could have been º ³
³º done by Eric Adams, all the while having his º ³
³º very own sound and personality. His return to º ³
³º the mic is a welcome return and has even made a º ³
³º really good album better with his delivery. The º ³
³º songwriting here also must be credited since the º ³
³º songs are well done and catchy with plenty of º ³
³º hooks to keep you interested. Why this band º ³
³º isn't one of the more well known in their genre º ³
³º is beyond me because this album can stand with º ³
³º any of the more established bands. The title º ³
³º track and album opener is the perfect example of º ³
³º what I'm talking about. Kick ass riffing starts º ³
³º the song off with a "killer" (seems that the º ³
³º album name is perfect) verse leading to a catchy º ³
³º chorus that reminds me of Gamma Ray a lot. The º ³
³º solo on this song is really good and their is º ³
³º many more on the album that are even better. º ³
³º º ³
³º "Warrior" is another song that is just catchy as º ³
³º fuck with a verse that is melodic with massive º ³
³º traditional metal riffing leading to a bridge º ³
³º that hooks you in and then they lay an awesome º ³
³º chorus on us. That's how heavy metal is done. º ³
³º Dahl's vocal delivery is one of the best on the º ³
³º album here with just an amazing sound and range. º ³
³º The beginning of "Hail the Fallen " has another º ³
³º vocal delivery that shows that Dahl's range is a º ³
³º force to be reckoned with. As much as I love º ³
³º Daniel Heiman, I think Dahl fits this band's º ³
³º music much better. Then we have "Forgotten º ³
³º Realms" which is a cross between metal ballad º ³
³º and epic metal. The melodies are just infectious º ³
³º on this song and the epic feel of the verses and º ³
³º chorus just adds to the beauty of it. Starting º ³
³º off with some nice clean sounding guitars this º ³
³º song just builds to become an epic monster with º ³
³º massive riffs and a killer solo all without º ³
³º forsaking the melodic hooks. This is, easily, º ³
³º the best song on the album. "The Lord of Chaos" º ³
³º is a riff fest with more of a speed metal feel. º ³
³º It's loaded with hooks and melodies but the º ³
³º riffing is what's impressive the most here. The º ³
³º chorus reminds me of Gamma Ray in a way. The º ³
³º guitar work on this song is actually impressive º ³
³º when you combine the riffs and the solos. º ³
³º º ³
³º The ballad is a staple of traditional/power º ³
³º metal but it seems that even the more º ³
³º established bands have been faltering in that º ³
³º aspect lately. However, I'm happy to say that º ³
³º Crystal Eyes has actually created a power metal º ³
³º ballad that not only can I listen to, but º ³
³º actually like...a lot! "Dreamers on Trial" is º ³
³º not cheesy or sappy, but instead it's a ballad º ³
³º that has that metal anthem feel to it. The metal º ³
³º has not been sacrificed as there is plenty of º ³
³º riffs and a solo that gives me goosebumps. This º ³
³º is how the metal ballad is done. "Dogs on Holy º ³
³º Ground" rounds out the album with a chorus that º ³
³º reminds me of "Dogs On Leads" by Accept for some º ³
³º reason. As a matter of fact, the riffing on most º ³
³º of this song has an old Accept feel to it making º ³
³º it stand out a bit from the rest of the album. º ³
³º º ³
³º As I said earlier, I do not know why this band º ³
³º is not as well known as their peers because they º ³
³º can deliver an album just as powerful and just º ³
³º as good as any out there, and this album is º ³
³º proof of that. The album is called Killer º ³
³º because it is just that, a killer heavy metal º ³
³º album.s º ³
