"It is a real shame that Ferdinand Ries is not more widely known in this country, because he produced some outstanding orchestral and chamber music in the early 19th century. This excellent CPO disk contains two first rate piano quartets, superbly performed by the Mendelssohn Piano Trio of Berlin, accompanied by violist Daniel Raiskin. Both works are 3-movement quartets with lengthy first movements in the classical sonata-allegro format, followed by shorter adagio/andante and rondo movements. In a word, both are delightful pieces, bringing together the seriousness of Beethoven and the classical brilliance of Mozart and Haydn. I highly recommend this lyrical, melodious, and aesthetically rewarding recording.
