³º ‘Last Of Us’. A Hard Rock infused Power Prog º ³
³º Metal album filled with sweeping, soulful º ³
³º melodies. Bringing quality Metal to the º ³
³º Commercial Rock masses. At least, if there still º ³
³º was such a thing as “Commercial Rock”–a man’s º ³

³º Upon first spin of ‘Last Of Us’ I did a double º ³
³º take, I thought I had played a new TEN album by º ³
³º mistake. As a huge fan of those UK rockers, I º ³
³º instantly recognized that melodic Hard Rock º ³
³º style in this heavier, Power Metal band. º ³
³º Exploring more, I discovered a º ³
³º Hollywood/Symphonic Metal scope within the Power º ³
³º and Prog. Vast caverns of easily accessible º ³
³º melodic hooks, emotion filled vocals, neo- º ³
³º classical guitars and keys, and forceful, º ³
³º precise rhythm.º ³
³º º ³
³º ARION keeps above the cheese so many other º ³
³º Power/Prog bands wallow in. Lyrical themes with º ³
³º real-world poignancy and genuine emotion. Mostly º ³
³º avoiding all the castles, swords, vikings, º ³
³º wizards, and space goofiness. Vocalist Viljami º ³
³º Holopainen is very atypical for this genre. Able º ³
³º to scream with the best with great range and º ³
³º technique. But he maintains a Hard Rock soul, º ³
³º singing from the heartabout profound subjects. º ³
³º º ³
³º I can’t believe these guys are barely out of º ³
³º high-school. They sound like seasoned veterans, º ³
³º with the weight and wisdom that comes from a º ³
³º lifetime of experiences. In addition to º ³
³º Holopainen there’s Guitar virtuoso Iivo º ³
³º Kaipainen, melody maestro Keyboardist Arttu º ³
³º Vauhkonen, with phenomenal, tight rhythms from º ³
³º Gege Velinov on Bass and Topias Kupiainen on º ³
³º Drums. Hopefully, this marks the beginning of a º ³
³º long and successful career. º ³

³º After an obligatory, yet stirring, instrumental º ³
³º intro we storm into the Neo-classical power of º ³
³º “Out of the Ashes”. º ³
³º º ³
³º The melodic “Seven” is a killer Prog Power Hard º ³
³º Rock track full of elaborate keys, guitar º ³
³º virtuosity, soaring vocals, and delicateº ³
³º haunting melodies. º ³
³º º ³
³º Metal fully emerges on “Shadows”. Pounding º ³
³º rhythm, heavy guitars, and aggressive full-range º ³
³º vocals. º ³
³º º ³
³º I can’t find any fault within the soulful piano º ³
³º ballad “You’re My Melody”. An album highlight º ³
³º with a stripped-bare Holopainen and more killer º ³
³º guitar. º ³
³º º ³
³º The Neo-classical “I Am the Storm” incorporates º ³
³º bleeding fast double bass drumming, full-on º ³
³º screaming, and burning guitar histrionics. º ³
³º Everything cranked to 11! º ³

³º The 7-minute Symphonic/Hollywood beast “Burn º ³
³º Your Ship” is aggressive and intricate with º ³
³º varied, crushing vocals (including chorales), º ³
³º more blasting from Kupiainen, and a duel melodic º ³
³º assault from Kaipainen and Vaukhonen. º ³
³º º ³
³º “Lost” and the more experimental/progressive º ³
³º “Last of Us” are full band, passionate Melodic º ³
³º Hard Metal songs. º ³

³º Epic closer “Watching You Fall” overpowers with º ³
³º potent riffing and pulverizing rhythm. Modern º ³
³º Prog Metal complete with a quirky, volatile º ³
³º mid-section break. º ³

³º The Japanese edition includes four bonus tracks: º ³
³º The regal Power Metaller “New Dawn”, a º ³
³º truncated/single version of “Shadows”, and º ³
³º beautiful acoustic versions of “Lost” and “Last º ³
³º of Us”. Worth the scratch if you can find it. I º ³

³º Often Power/Prog Metal albums wear thin with º ³
³º lots of blur and song-bleed. Amazingly, I didn’t º ³
³º notice any of that with the expertly produced º ³
³º ‘Last Of Us’. Each song is distinct and potent º ³
³º while the diversity keeps things fresh. º ³

³º Can’t imagine what living in a “Metal heaven” º ³
³º like Finland must be like. ARION’s début ‘Last º ³
